Are Bangladesh stamps public domain?
No Bangladeshi stamp is public domain yet, in the archive's reading of Wikimedia Commons. Bangladesh protects government works for 60 years from publication, and the first Bangladeshi stamps appeared on July 29, 1971, so the earliest issues become free on January 1, 2032. The cutoff moves forward one year each January.
Why not until 2032?
Commons says a government work in Bangladesh is protected for 60 years, counted from the start of the year after publication, under Section 28 of the Copyright Act 2023.1 Its note on stamps applies that term: the first stamps were issued on July 29, 1971, so Commons expects none to qualify before 2032.1 The 2023 act is not retroactive, and neither was the Copyright Act 2000 it replaced. The 2000 act had in turn replaced the Copyright Ordinance 1962, which Commons describes as identical to Pakistan's law, with 50-year terms.1 Commons does not say whether that shorter term ever applied to a stamp, and the archive follows the 60 years in Commons' note.
Postal history and copyright
Bengal was part of British India until 1947, then the eastern part of Pakistan, and became independent as Bangladesh in 1971.1 The first eight Bangladeshi stamps were issued on July 29, 1971, during the Liberation War, from Mujibnagar.2 Bengali Wikipedia says the graphic artist Biman Mallick designed them for the government in exile.3 While those stamps were in production, local postmasters were authorized to overprint the Pakistani stamps they held with the new country's name; these provisionals stopped being valid on April 30, 1973.2 Commons' note treats Bangladeshi stamps as government works. It does not discuss stamps with a named designer or the Pakistani designs under the 1971 overprints, and the archive treats both questions as open.

Bangladesh stamps and the public domain: questions
- Are Bangladeshi stamps public domain?
- Not yet. In the archive's reading, Bangladesh protects government works such as its stamps for 60 years from the end of the year of issue, and the first Bangladeshi stamps appeared on July 29, 1971. The earliest issues become public domain on January 1, 2032.

- On January 1, 2032. Bangladesh's first stamps were issued on July 29, 1971, and government works there are protected for 60 years, counted from the start of the year after publication. Later issues follow one year at a time each January.
- Are the 1971 Bangladesh overprints on Pakistani stamps public domain?
