Are Belize stamps public domain?
Belize stamps issued before 1981 are public domain once 50 years have passed, in the archive's reading of Wikimedia Commons; in 2026 that means 1975 or earlier. The cutoff moves forward each January until it reaches the 1980 issues. Stamps from independence in 1981 on are under ordinary copyright, which belongs first to the State.
Why 1981?
Commons says stamps issued before Belizean independence in 1981 fall under British Crown copyright.1 Commons' page on the United Kingdom gives Crown copyright a basic term of 50 years from publication, and Commons' license tag accepts Crown works published more than 50 years ago.23 For stamps since independence, Commons cites Section 25(4) of the Copyright Act of 2000: copyright in a work made by or under the direction of the Government belongs first to the State, and with no special term for stamps the ordinary rules apply.1 Commons also says Belize has no public domain government works.1 The archive's reading marks these later stamps copyrighted and gives them no date.
Postal history and copyright
The territory was the British colony of British Honduras, a Crown colony from 1862, and it issued its own stamps from 1866.14 It was renamed Belize on June 1, 1973, and the first stamps under the new name were British Honduras stamps overprinted "BELIZE".4 Independence came on September 21, 1981.1 Commons names the colony in its tag list: Crown copyright applies to stamps issued in British Honduras before independence.1 It also says that until the 2000 act, copyright in Belize was governed by the United Kingdom's Copyright Act 1956, under the Belize Independence Order 1981.1 Commons' stamp note does not say how that older law treats stamps issued from 1981 to 2000; the archive's rule marks them copyrighted with the later stamps.
