Are Faroe Islands stamps public domain?
Faroe Islands stamps of any year are public domain, according to Wikimedia Commons. Commons accepts them on the strength of a public domain release from the philatelic office of Postverk Føroya, the Faroese post, and its tag says the release applies worldwide. There is no cutoff date.
Why any date?
Faroese copyright law protects most works for 70 years after the author's death, and Commons' page lists no exemption for stamps.1 The status rests on a release. In November 2004 a Commons uploader posted a written permission dated April 19, 2004 from Knud Wacher of Postverk Føroya's philatelic office: "You are welcome to copy our stamps as 'public domains'."2 Commons' license tag for Faroese stamps names that office as the copyright holder that released the stamps into the public domain, refers to a permission on file with Commons, and says the release applies worldwide.3 Commons' list of stamp templates says Faroese stamps of any year can be uploaded.4
Postal history and copyright
Danish stamps were used in the islands from 1870 until the first stamps inscribed FØROYAR went on sale on January 30, 1975.56 The Danish postal service produced those first issues; the Faroese home government took over the post on April 1, 1976 as Postverk Føroya.56 The release Commons relies on came from Postverk Føroya's philatelic office, Commons does not say whether it reaches the stamps issued under Danish administration in 1975 and early 1976, though its tag and the archive's rule cover stamps of any year. The release was questioned on Commons from 2004 to 2008: editors pointed to a notice on the Faroestamps website that barred commercial use without the Philatelic Office's permission, and one argued that the designers may not have handed over their rights.2 The post became a limited company on January 1, 2005 and has been called Posta since 2009.5

Faroe Islands stamps and the public domain: questions
- Are Faroe Islands stamps public domain?
- Yes, for stamps of any year, according to Wikimedia Commons. It accepts Faroese stamps on the strength of a 2004 public domain release from the philatelic office of Postverk Føroya, the Faroese post, and its tag says the release applies worldwide. There is no cutoff date.
- Can Faroese stamps be used commercially?
- Unsettled. Wikimedia Commons' tag says the Faroese post's public domain release applies worldwide, but editors noted that the Faroestamps website barred commercial use without the Philatelic Office's permission. The discussion, which ran from 2004 to 2008, never settled the question.
- Are the first Faroese stamps of 1975 covered?
- Unclear from the release itself. The first Faroese stamps of January 30, 1975 were produced by the Danish postal service before Postverk Føroya took over on April 1, 1976, and Wikimedia Commons does not say whether the post's release reaches them. Its tag and the archive's rule cover Faroese stamps of any year.
